Sheppard Road is an arterial divided highway running along the east bank of the Mississippi River between 7th Street W (where it becomes East River Road) and Wabasha Street (where it becomes Warner Road. It is generally not recommended to ride on Shepard due to the large amount of high speed traffic.

An off-street multi-use path runs along the south side of Shepard Road offering separate asphalt-paved tracks for bicycles and pedestrians. The pavement is in poor condition in the area west of Randolph Avenue, but improves considerably near downtown Saint Paul. In winter, one of the two parallel paths is plowed. Consider detouring through Crosby Farm Park to avoid a good portion of the rough pavement. The trails there are less direct and have more hills, but they are typically in better condition and the scenery is much nicer.
