Traffic calming represents a category of road treatments & design intended to reduce to reduce motor vehicle speeds and overall numbers to provide a safer environment for non-motorized road users and adjacent infrastructure. Generally the type of traffic calming devices employed are determined by the exact nature of the problem. For example, a cu-de-sac is an example of the most extreme measure - a dead end street serving only a few homes.
