Anyone riding the course fixed?

So far there are 14 people signed up to ride it fixed. Last years winner rode it fixed and I expect some of this years fixed riders to do quite well.

Whoops.. just realized something.

My support guy can't be there this weekend. Anyone able to save my ass if the need arises?

I'll be heading down to Rochester from Mpls on Sat am (17th, of course) in a van w/a 4bike rack - got room for three.

I'm sharing a support crew with a couple other guys. I'll PM you my cell and on the day of the race I can get you the cell number for our support folks.

Thanks for the offers folks, I also realized I really need to get my shit together before my vacation next month (taking June off to ride my bike around Lake Superior!) so I'm not going to do it.. next year!

[edit]

Mayor, sent you an e-mail this morning.

Days away...

My bike choice is far from finalized, my 'support crew' became an ex-gf and is no more, and I haven't rode a mile of gravel this year.

I haven't been riding a whole lot because of a painful, annoying upper respiratory illness I picked up upon returning from China. Today was the first time in a week or so that my 7 mile morning commute didn't feel like it was killing me. Hopefully a few more days of recovery will have me in decent enough shape to at least make it to the halfway point.

Just an update on the course conditions:

1.The roads seem to have pretty decent lines throughout the first section. There appears to be some fresh rock in a few areas, but for the most part there is almost always hard pack available.

2.The wind will be a factor in some way or another. The course travels in every direction around the city of Rochester so you can expect a headwind of some kind or another. Let's just hope it isn't strong and it isn't near the finish.

3.Dogs shouldn't be a problem, I have seen a few, but none that really pose a threat.

I guess that is about it for now. I am going to post a more complete report on the blog on Friday afternoon. By the way, the weather report says 60's and partly sunny for race day so keep your fingers crossed it doesn't change because that sounds pretty good to me.

Anyone have good techniques for fending off dogs? I got bit in the ass by a Grand Pyrenees last winter, and don't want a repeat.

I tried outsprinting the dog, and it didn't work. 120 lbs of fur and teeth can be a lot faster than you think.

Assert your dominance.

So long as you're biking, they think you're prey.

Stop, face the dog, and command it with a deep voice.

This has worked for me, but also results in a stalemate --
the dog won't leave and as soon as you start moving again,
it starts attacking again... so either mace it or yell for its owner...

However, some meaner breeds of dogs probably don't take
kindly to your kind 'round these parts...

carry a T-bone with you. if you don't run into any vicious dogs, you can eat it yourself.

Thanks for putting this on Chris! You really did a great job organizing it. Are you going to be posting the pics you took?

I rolled in at about the 6h mark.

Me and my friend Eric rolled in around 6:30pm, and tied for last place. I guess that the winners rolled in around 1:30pm. Eric and I are looking forward to starting a tradition of finishing this race DFL every year.

Big props to Chris for putting this all together, and to the sponsors and volunteers. It was a great race. I had a great time riding my first century ever.

I can tell you how I did :) Hopefully mayor will get those results up today. I was 36th across the line, in 8:04 from the start time, probably 7th fixed (they weren't sure they'd recorded all the fixed riders at the line). We started 15 minutes late because I forgot the directions at home.

All I care about was that I finished.

Overall I thought it was great, much hillier than last year, but since it was a loop, the wind was only temporarily your enemy. Mayor's information and cue sheets were perfect except for one small typo :) The roads were in fine shape, at a lot of times i didn't even feel like I was riding on gravel. Only a couple of fast turns made me nervous enough to slow down. There were a couple of times when the crosswinds combined with speed made me feel like my rear wheel was sliding out from underneath me, but that's what makes it fun!

peedubya's dog technique worked well too.
