I also need to experiment with ways to keep my cleats (SPD style) from acting like heatsinks and making the bottom of my feet super cold. I think just creating some kind of insulation to go between the sole and the insole should do the trick.
I think this is the main weakness of cycling shoes in the winter. This is one reason why I wear my Lake sandals. The SPD mounts don't go all the way through the sole so there's no draft.

They also work well as heatsinks if you put your feet next to a good bonfire.
They warmed my feet up nicely and stayed that way for a good half hour.

I tried a new upper outfit today.
I dug out my old snowboarding jacket shell
Long sleeve cotton shirt
Long underwear (wicking)
T-shirt
I totally overheated. That wicking long underwear top totally did me in. I just bought it at REI, and it works exceptionally well. Dang I was dripping when I got to work despite unzipping the jacket and rolling up the sleeves.
I think I'll loose the long sleeve cotton shirt and the T-shirt on the way home.

I wore a 100% polyester t-shirt on the ride to work today. And that helped me not be sweaty when I got to work. I bought it at a camping store years ago and haven't found much use for it until I realized what an idiot I was for not wearing it sooner. I'd recommend getting a non cotton t-shirt to go next to your skin. Helps mucho.

As seen on the Morc board...
http://www.portlandcyclewear.com/woolcyclingjersey.html
The price breaks for a quantity of 25 and more is 42.50 a jersey. Embroidery is 12.00 per jersey, in quantity.
Just a thought, y'all.

i broke down last friday and went to sports authority at the mall of america, and oddly enough, they totally came through with some science gear. I got a columbia titanium shell which i have already misplaced, which is okay, because the thicker solomon shell (or is it salomon?) is pretty great, and lately has done the trick with a hoodie or flannel underneath it. actually, there have been some overheating episodes.
but here's something: i am convinced that the cold i'm currently battling is a direct result of my ride home last thursday night. it was crisp, i was booking it, and my face was uncovered. i totally got a bunch of cold air in my lungs, got that weird blood taste in my mouth and was all spitty (does anyone know what i'm talking about?) and my chest was pounding. it felt like what i imagine an asthma attack to be like, and this has happened before in cold weather, but only then.
i don't like it.
so i also bought a face mask, serius or something like that, $15 at sports authority. it's great, if funny looking, but it makes my glasses fog up, so i guess i'll have to find my hard case for those so i can stash 'em while i ride.
also, i absolutely love the louis garneau gloves i got at the hub last year. they are two-parted, with a shell and a liner, totally breathable and have a snot patch that is nice and soft.
but i haven't ridden yet today, so that's all for now.

I've gotten this before. Especially after really hammering, or when I get back on the bike and I'm outta shape (that's pretty much constant), typically only in cold weather.
I remember years ago I'd be really cruising in really cold weather, and I'd be coughing a ton when I got to my destination. The coughing sometimes wouldn't stop for hours. Sucked.

yup, that's it, only in this case it preceded a cold that was in all likelihood unrelated, but instead of not stopping for a couple hours, the coughing's been going on for eight days.
s'weeet.

It felt pretty cold and windy this morning for the commute to school. I wore the new bibber tights, leg warmers, arm warmers, unix t-shirt, two long sleeve cotton shirts, a thin (helmet-compatable) balaclava, and thick fingered leather gloves.

T-shirt, fingerless gloves, short socks.
It was a little chilly, but my commute was short enough that it wasn't wort it to pull out the armwarmers.

I wore a t-shirt and a cotton hoodie with a windbreaker over that with the windbreaker unzipped. No gloves. Big mistake.
I even took my gloves out of my bag because I had been carting them around and not using them for a while. Froze my fuggin hands on my short commute downtown today.
