wasn't sure if this should go here or in the sewing thread in blah, blah. blah.

My xtracycle bag is beginning to show it's age.

I've been pointed to Midwest Mountaineering, but their website says they've got a 2wk backlog on repairs. Any other local providers, preferably with shorter turnaround?

Appears to be a design flaw in the newer bags. Mine are having the same problem.

What does xtracycle say about it?

Finally got around to emailing them about it;

Quote:
Your FreeLoaders are out of warranty, as it's been over a year, but we're prepared to offer you a new pair of black FreeLoaders (only color we're carrying these days) for a vastly reduced price. We can offer them for $85.50 for the pair.

Let me know if this of interest to you.

Sincerely,

Don't know how I feel about that. I have a plan to reinforce the current set, but need access to a sewing machine that'll attach 1" nylon webbing to the current fabric, or find a canvas repair place to do the work for me.

Think you should get the freeloaders anyway for $85. Then get these fixed at some shoe repair place like George's shoe repair or Twin City Luggage. Never used TC Luggage but George's is really good.

That's kind of the conclusion I came to on the ride home. I figure that I do the reinforcing on my current set, even if that means I lose the bags for a couple weeks, I'll have stronger bags and spares. $85 is reasonable.

I was just balking at the idea of losing my only xtracycle bags for a couple weeks while I get them fixed. I can't go that long without my cargo bike.

Email reply is already sent. I'll keep folks posted, if there's other Xtracycle customers out there who'd be interested.

I'm definitely interested in hearing how it turns out.

Got a response from XtraCycle;

Looks like they want place/date of purchase and a picture of the damage. Then they give you a coupon code for the discount.

My order total (w/ S&H) came to $98

Thanks for the offer, but the new ones are already in the mail. Once they arrive, I'll look at getting the current ones fixed / reinforced.

New bags arrived on Mon (7/30).

If you look carefully, the first step in the strengthening project is installed. The clips are held to the p-rack with hose clamps, rather than the velcro straps that kept coming loose on the middle clip. I replaced the velcro with 3-4 zipties, which would last a month or two before they had to be replaced.

Eventually, I'm going to replace the side release buckles with these;

That should eliminate the problem of the plastic breaking where it's strapped to the rack. One of my old ones did that, too.

The cam buckle create another problem that I haven't solved yet, that is how to keep the loose end of the strap out of the way.

I'd think the little clips they use on the end of the straps could be used to secure the ends
