Can't say who was at fault. Cruising down m'haha pkwy last Saturday, taking the lane at 22mph and keeping up with traffic, the SUV in front of does a quick stop at a path crossing. I slammed on the breaks, but my chainring (actually, chainguard) on my recumbent squished the guy's plastic bumper and dinged/scratched the paint off the metal part of the rear door. Haven't seen the estimate yet, but we exchanged addresses, etc., and we waited around for the MPD to take a report.

Anyone have any experience with a similar situation?

Do you have drivers insurance AKA car insurance? If you do, more than likely that will cover it, but YMMV.
Good luck

I haven't experienced exactly this, but having recently been in my first car-bike accident (where the driver was at fault), I've had a lot of reason to get curious about this.

If you're at fault -- and it sounds like you are -- your insurance is liable for the damages, and you will have to pay a deductible. If you own a car and have car insurance, the claim will go to them. If you do not own a car, then it would go to anyone who is insured in your household. If you're in a totally car-free household (good job!), then it might come to your personal liability coverage on your homeowner's or renter's policy -- it's broad coverage for unintentional acts not covered by other insurance.

Hopefully at least one of these applies. Otherwise, it may be simplest just to pay him out of pocket (making sure he releases you from future liability), assuming the damages aren't absurd.

And on the bright side... an SUV actually stopping for a pedestrian in a crosswalk is a pretty good sight!

Yeah it's like $700-$1000 a panel or bumper. So one bumper and one panel might be $1.5k.

1.4k. Got a claim number and an adjuster. We'll see how it goes.

Kuando should be a claims adjuster with that kind of accuracy.

I once tried to go between the curb and a SUV- a stupid dangerous move in and of itself- and broke the side view mirror off of the vehicle right off with my shoulder. ( Cheap construction- I barely even felt it). Turns out that the driver was a cop just getting off work. Insurance was not involved since I don't own a car so I just gave her my number to call me with the bill. Needless to say, I had no intension of weasling out of paying a cop what I owed her. I got lucky. she could have charged me 300$ + for a new mirror from a dealer. Instead she got the cheapest one she could find from a junk yard and I only had to pay 160.

Something tells me Kuando might have a little experience in this realm.

Oh yeah, that's right . I totally did that on purpose to smash the state, not because I'm a clumsy dumbass.
