George W. Bush uses it:

Never tried it myself. I've been playing with Endomondo recently, thanks to ChrisAdyNelson's recommendation (plus a few other blr's).... And it works great for me. Strava seems a little more race-oriented, and my biking tends to be mostly for transportation/fun.

Any chance you've used Endomondo too? How does it compare?

I do not but one thing I love about strava is the leader boards. It breaks your rides down into segments which you then place on leader boards, i'v managed to nab 8th and 10th place on a few sprints compared to about 500 other people so it's really neat to be able to see my hard work paying off in some capacity.

you also get personal records for riding the same segment faster than previous attempts and such. overall, it's a really awesome program.

Strava gets sued by moron's family [editorial comment mine]

link

while I think the story is an obvious outlier, I think it illustrates the depth of the rabbit hole pretty well too. Some people just NEED those tokens

that's interesting. I'm smart enough to not risk my own life trying to beat a score but hey maybe some people aren't. I just like to use it to see my improvements and track all my miles.

I had a Cateye once (this was pre-GPS) that calculated your average speed over time and told you if you were above or below it. It was the first and last bike computer I ever had because it was a pretty frustrating carrot that forced me to keep upping my speed, and I imagine once or twice I really got in the zone and placed the need to go faster above my safety.

Obviously, I don't think that there's a basis for this lawsuit but I certainly get his mindset at the time.

I'm on there, despite the fact that between baby, workshop, and RealJobTM, I have almost no time to ride.

I enjoy taking it easy way too much to warrant risking my life doing dumb shit

I specifically remember one time as a kid in Berkeley hitting 35mph on my MTB and watching my front wheel wobble at an uncomfortable rate. I slowed down. I've done dumb shit, but having a ranking on some arbitrary site doesn't deserve my life.

Bike love! Being alive love!

I really like the idea of these kind of apps but I get really lazy about actually using them. Especially on the commute. I think I'll give the Strava a try. I've used a super basic app called thebike. But it wasn't that great.

I've been an avid Strava user for awhile now, and love it. I tried MapMyRide a few times as well, but Strava blows it out of the water imo.

Finally gave this a try. It doesn't track as well as MyTracks- seems like it doesn't start right away and the total distance doesn't seem right. I do like the leaderboards though and I'll continue to use it just for that.

Hennepin Bridge will be mine. (2nd eastbound with a crosswind and 4th westbound with a stiff headwind - both with a loaded backpack)

Edit: and I'm going to crush the Stone Arch segment (running).

Crap, another bike app for me to grab.

How do you guys deal with your phone on your rides? I usually start an app and toss it in my pannier. The downside is that sometimes the GPS fails to lock and I don't know that my ride isn't being logged (CycleTracks, usually) until I reach the end.
