The guy was completely covering up the button so I and the other 42 people watiing assumed he had pushed it, but nope... Those were 42 rather cranky people. For one hopeful moment I thought it was open this morning, as some of the signage was taken (or perhaps blown) down. I guess I'll have to wait. I will say, though that the closure has taught me that the bridge was more important than I had previously thought. I know there were come people on here who have said they actually prefer to take the street level crossing, but I assume that only works when everyone (or almost everyone) else is taking the bridge. It certainly doesn't when everyone is crossing at that light.

Yay! Less clowns butting in line while I wait to cross the street. Quote: Sabo Bridge re-opens to bicycle and pedestrian traffic The Sabo bike and pedestrian bridge, which has been closed since a pair of support cables broke loose in February, is re-opening this afternoon to foot and bike traffic.
Structural support was added underneath the bridge deck in the days following the bridge’s closure. After an evaluation of the bridge, engineers determined that with a few modifications to the support structures, the bridge could be reopened to bike and pedestrian traffic. In the last few days, crews have adjusted the temporary supports and the tension on the bridge’s cables to allow for it to be reopened.
Meanwhile, the City is awaiting a report on what caused the cables to break loose in the first place.
The Sabo Bridge is a 215 foot-long cable-stayed suspension bridge that opened in November of 2007 to carry Midtown Greenway bicycles and pedestrians over Hiawatha Avenue. The bridge was built by Hennepin County and turned over to the City of Minneapolis when construction was completed.

I get a kick out of the "re-opens to bicycle and pedestrian traffic" ...It makes it sound like they will open it to cars at a later date.

Sweet.
Did anyone else notice the 3 planters that are placed in the path off the bridge on the East side? I noticed them a few days ago... my assumption is that they're meant to prevent any heavy vehicles from going onto the bridge between now and whenever the permanent fix is done. (hopefully they'll get removed at that point).

I'm sure its a lawyer / insurance thing while the two cables are disconnected and the bracing is under the bridge.

I get that it's re-opened to bicycle and pedestrian traffic. What I don't get is - what else is there? It's a bike pedestrian bridge. Don't tell me it has to support 3 squad cars, and ambulance and a fire truck. There are zillions of places in the city where someone might get hurt, or a drunk might pass out, and emergency vehicles can't drive in; police or paramedics just have to go in on foot, that's nothing new. Why spend all the additional money so cops can drive up on that little bridge instead of parking at one end and walking? Isn't this just overkill, making it vastly more expensive to build bicycle/pedestrian bridges?
