I only feel that way in fancy bars in the nice part of town.

Don't argue with the comments, just agree with them instead.

For example: "Bikes don't belong on the road, it's dangerous. That's why I always drive, even to the store, three blocks away. Sure, the traffic on the roads is always slow and backed up, and often I have to circle around the block for 30 minutes, trying to find a spot to park, but bikes don't belong on the roads."

Even with the slightest bit of wind, you can almost always feel the cables vibrating a little bit if you touch them, especially the longer ones.

Sorry for how completely obvious this is...

Minneapolis officials now hope to reopen span by Memorial Day

More than two months after a cracked anchor plate and snapped cable disabled the Martin Olav Sabo Bridge, the 2,200-foot-long structure remains closed to the pedestrians and bicyclists who used it to cross over Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis.

Jack Yuzna, the city’s bridge engineer, said a month ago that he hoped to have an answer as to whether it would be temporarily feasible to reopen the bridge.

Yuzna now says it is generally feasible to allow pedestrians and bicyclists back on the bridge. But traffic has to be kept off the bridge for at least another week or two because it would interfere with the gauges trying to determine what caused the bridge’s issues in the first place.

An anemometer — a fancy name for a wind gauge — is measuring wind speeds, for example. Accelerometers are measuring vibrations.

Public Works Director Steve Kotke would like to have the bridge reopened by Memorial Day. Besides waiting for completed data collection related to the sensors, a few thousand dollars’ worth of extra work will be needed to further strengthen the extra shoring and supports installed after the bridge was disabled Feb. 19.

Kotke also thinks the city should get a report by the end of the month from Chicago-based Wiss Janney Elstner Associates, which is investigating what caused the problems with the five-year-old, $5.1 million bridge.

“We kind of know what happened. We want to know why it happened,” Kotke said.

The bridge will likely be closed again in the fall for whatever major repair work results from the WJE study. Kotke won’t know the repair work’s costs until the study results are submitted.

For now, the bridge is stabilized enough that the city has been able to cut inspections to three times a week versus the daily inspections that were conducted only a few weeks ago, Yuzna said.

Alright! Thanks for posting this. I'm getting tired of having to sit at that interminable light at Hiawatha. It seems like I always just miss it and have to wait the whole cycle.

For it to be a preferable detour, you simply need to find new ways to amuse yourself. For example, push the walk button, when it says "Wait." too softly for your liking, give the button a good smack for a more satisfying "WAIT."

And you guys think I'm kidding.

I normally take the street level crossing. This Sunday made me reconsider... we have the light, many bikes crossing from both directions and this old-asshat-man headed north just keeps rolling and finally stops completely in the crosswalk (after I shouted at him - his window was down). Really stress the wife out.

The Sabo bridge can be a nice way to keep a ride enjoyable and low-stress!

i cant flipping wait for the sabo to open. my work hrs (9-530) have me going through that intersection everyday, right at bike commuter rush hour. and holy polka is it an absolute mess then. up to a dozen (sometimes more) riders on both sides, trying to squeeze through those two little crossings. add cars that dont know what a cross walk is, and riders who dont know how to wait in line or ride a bike, and its an absolute mess.

... and then you get a couple of them leaning on the post without pushing the button, so you don't ever get the walk signal.

And if you hold the button down it will say "WAIT WAIT wait wait wait."
