Don't wanna be the D-bag here.... but I got a good laugh yesterday:

PM commute (~5:00) riding west on McGinty Rd in Minnetonka, see a bike headed east. I'm in knickers and a T-shirt, he is in full pants, full jacket and... full-face balaclava! Really?!?

To be fair, I know that some people have medical issues with cold and need extra protection.

Some people are just wussies when it comes to the "cold," too.

same thing happened to me when I got home from work. Was sitting on my front stoop in shorts and a t shirt enjoying the warmth of the sun and there rides by someone with over pants, jacket and a snow board helmet.

I've been overdressing this week too, because it's way colder in the mornings than it is in the afternoons and I don't have much cargo space to carry my extra clothes on the ride home.

I get that too! My bag is bulging on the PM commute! Today should be really bad 30F AM and 65F PM! But I bet you could fit the full-face balaclava in your bag, pocket... just sayin'

Nah, different pair of socks, one pair of long johns, wind breaker, gloves and balaclava don't take up much space. In fact it takes up the space my now eaten lunch did on the way in.

Folks just have different tolerances to cold and heat. I've been commuting all year, cold of the winter, heat of the summer. I'm probably the guy you see in a full rainsuit when you are in knickers and a T-shirt. I have a really low tolerance for the cold. My knees hurt if they get the least bit cold. So I just bundle up more and ride. Same when it's raining. Or snowing.
So am I a wuss because I wear more clothes than you do, yet I commute everyday regardless of the weather?
Bill.

I'm sorry, Bill. You're not a wuss. I understand people with different tolerances. I know the "cold knees" you speak of, and it's not a good feeling.

My statement was directed more towards those wearing parkas when it's above 50. I can't imagine they're doing anything but sweating up a storm.

I mean no offense, just sharing a what makes my simple mind laugh. Likewise, I do laugh at people out in -10F weather in shorts and a T-shirt. I'm certain many people have had a good laugh seeing me out and about (I'm a dork).

Everyone biking (especially commuting) is bad ass in my book, you can wear a parka or tutu, I don't care (as long as your not sensitive about me snickering)!

Enjoy the ride!

Just remember, as you pass the 50 mark, your knees (and maybe other parts) will probably require different attire than they did when you were 30. This is an aging thing, and there is nothing you can do about it - I wear knee warmers when the temp gets below 45 now (and a shell) - but I still can't deal with the August heat and humidity

Yep, 58 and my knees need warmth. They really do hurt if they get the least bit cold.
And as I get older, the heat doesn't bother me as much. Commuted every day last summer in shorts, T-shirt and sandals. Just didn't ride as hard.
As I said, we all have different tolerances to the heat and cold.
Bill.

Went outside in a t-shirt at 8:30 to test the temperature, reckoned that two more layers would do for today. No hat, thin gloves, and I shucked a layer midroute. Yesterday I despaired existence, today I can't wait for my evening commute.

I failed to pay attention to the weather forecast, then got stuck at work late last night, so at 12:30-1am I was rocking the emergency bike cape I keep in my commute pannier for just such an occasion. First time in a few years.

It would have been nice to be on one of my bikes with fenders though......
