At work, on the internet - thought this review of tail lights was worth sharing on bikelove.

They excluded DiNotte. Really, that tells me plenty.

OMG I ride around with one of the dimmest lights out there. The Cateye reflex auto. Good thing it is a reflector as well which the reviewer didn't mention.

I have never, ever, ever, ever considered spending $130-$200 on a taillight. But, it's fucking amazing that such great taillights Actually exist!

Maybe this tells you more:
"Many people expressed an interest in DiNotte’s lights, but unfortunately we were unable to acquire one for this review and the company declined to loan a light for the review."

I have a couple of these as well. They seem much more visible than the article suggests but eat batteries faster than the article suggests. They didn't discuss the mounting issues with the light either. I wonder if they reviewed a different light altogether.

I have seen Hokan's Cateye lights in action and it seemed plenty bright enough to me. I agree that the Planet Bike superflash is still the best tail light for the $$$.

I wouldn't even WANT anything brighter than my pdw danger zone. There's a difference between being seen and blinding drivers.

Hi! I'm the guy who wrote the review. Noticed a significant number of incoming views from this post, so thought I'd check out the discussion.

Hokan: if you check the review for the Reflex/Reflex Auto again, you'll see I did mention its reflector:

Quote:

Both from the light sensor measurements and just looking at its output compared to other lights, it actually is quite dim. The reflector casing does help to disperse the light a bit, and makes it a large light target, but indeed it's not very bright.

I had no issues with the mounting. The rack mount was a bit funky, but it worked fine. I didn't use the seat post mount, but it didn't look particularly complicated.

As to this:

I understand that the DiNotte is considered to be one of, if not the brightest light out there. This came up on the Reddit thread for this article too, so I'll quote my answer there:

Quote:
I wanted to review the DiNotte, but they're $200, which is just under how much we spent on all the other lights combined. I contacted them asking if they'd be interested in loaning one for the review, but their opinion seems to be that because theirs is the brightest, there's no point reviewing any other lights, and they don't want to tarnish their brand name by being included in a review with any other lights which such horribly inferior products in their opinion. shrug.

Basically, I was seeking to review mainstream consumer-level lights. The DiNotte is a top-of-the-line light which costs more than some people's bikes do. I would've gladly included it had I been able to borrow one, but couldn't justify spending twice the amount of money on the review, just to add a single light. After an email conversation with them in which I was treated less than politely, I decided I particularly didn't want to give them my business, even if their light is brighter. I'm sure they're great lights, but I have no regrets about omitting them from this review.

I hope you folks found the article useful overall. If you have any more questions/comments, let me know, and I'll try to check back here later.

I use a Planet Bike Turbo strobing and a Cateye TL-LD500 on solid, which is also an approved reflector. Works for me.

Nice work. This review is great. And way to keep an eye on the pulse of your readers.

+1 I really like the mounts for the Superflash and now that I have a couple of them I don't think I'd ever switch to a light with another mounting system. (I might consider PDW- they use the same mounts, right?) Even the regular Superflash can be a little much if you're riding with others.

I'm surprised the Cygolite has a bad mount. One of the things I like the most about my Cygolite headlight is the rock solid, yet easy to remove mount.

Both Planet Bike and Cygolite have great customer service too. I smashed a PB headlight once because I didn't fully attach it and they basically sent me a new one. The battery housing cracked on my Cygolite headlight and they sent out a new one with an improved housing before I sent back the broken one. Not sure if other companies will do the same, but it's another thing to consider.

love my PDW dangerzone as well. have tons of old PB mounts around so this can go from bike to bike with ease!

the cygolite hotshot was not even on my radar, so this review was good! might get one for my dad, who will mount it on his bike once and never take it off except to charge batteries. he rides along fairly busy roads when he bike commutes, so this in combo with a superflash should be powerful~

thanks for the review, great job!
