coworker had his bike stolen using a similar method. they cut the frame under the seatpost, apparently thinking that the seatpost would create enough tension to make the bike "whole" again.

It looks like I can see a table leg through that top tube but the hole in the 1x1 from this thread looks to be more toward the front.

Correct. The 1x1 was left behind, the Pugsley was taken.
