That's not true, and I think you know that, euterpe. There are so many more obvious reasons for smugness.

Sure, some child-free folks can be smug.
But does it really compare to parents who see nothing wrong at going to a nice restaurant or movie with a crying child?
At least being smug is quiet.

When I worked at figlio, there was a woman (perhaps a couple) who brought her baby to a pub crawl. I'm not a fan of baby formula, so Bailey's did the trick.

Getting back to the subject at hand, I was pretty appalled to find out that the maternity leave policy is 6 weeks unpaid at my mostly-women workplace.  If you want to extend your leave to 12 weeks, your entire remaining PTO (vacation & sick time combined) is absorbed within the second 6 weeks.  So, after the birth, don't plan on getting sick, tending to a sick kid, or taking any time off to catch your breath!! Ugh. I later found out that my organization provides "disability" coverage, ('cause parenthood is tantamount to being disabled) for which you can apply and receive 60% of your salary between weeks 2 and 12. That is a little more reassuring. My organization pays for this insurance, though they don't have to. I wonder whether these policies will be changing in the next few years, as my co-workers are mostly women in their 20s and 30s.

Unless someone is really a planner, ladies are probably not shopping for maternity leave plans when they look for a job. I started this job 4 years ago, when maternity was not at all on the radar.
