This isn't far off although I think it wants you to turn it on and off each time.

Yeah - I went and looked at your links after I wrote out my idea, and its was kind of cool in the same basic idea. What if you had a light mount with a headlight, and when you took the headlight off (i.e. like I always do when I lock up in public, but never when i have the bike just at home or in my workplace spot) and that automatically turns on the tracker. You could even do it with a rechargeable light. You take the light off, charge it, and when you mount the light back on the bike it charges the tracker (if needed).

THAT would be fricking awesome - both the charging aspect and the enable/disable by removing the light from the mount.

That's a seriously great idea. I would buy one.

I also would consider getting this, and I think it would be a viable product.
Most population centers are now equiped with city WIFI also, so something like an eyfi card might work. It could double as a route tracker for those curious where they rode that day, accessable through a secure web portal/phone app.
A rear light mount might be the ideal spot, because a larger mount (for the electronics) might not be as noticable as a bar mount. It could also go all Di2 and stuff it in the seatpost or stem... or like the Masi seatpost with the integrated rear light.

Who here understands electonics and arduino programing well enough to help with a functional prototype? I have an arduino and breadboard available for the project.
As a product designer, I have prototyping tools, access to production methods and distribution networks that could actually get this off the ground...

oh yay. my idea has blossomed. Do I get like 20% of the profits for coming up with this? I can do your package design and print advertising :D

phaedrus pointed me at this thread. I have some skills in building electronics, such as robotic sculpture. But more on the mark, I have done several projects with Arduinos. I have a background in operating systems and embedded systems programming (before I switched to the web thing c. 1995).

I saw ebbmart's mention that he's got some of the parts required and thought of Wade who is fellow bicycle commuter and has the relevant skills.

I want to see this happen :)

Also, I was thinking, once you get a prototype worked up, maybe a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to get an initial production run?

Thanks phaedrus for pointing Wade over here! Ill get in touch! I also think the kickstarter idea is golden!
Seakat, if this really happens, we can talk :D

Might also be fun/useful to be able to manually turn the tracker on, just in case you want to track a ride for whatever reason.

I can build the website that takes the tracking info and displays a map, etc etc
