It's more or less portage-able, however, use caution. Is it just me or does it seem like trees fall onto the path in this area at least a few times per year? I can think of two other times just this summer that it has happened

That would be about right, the ones I'm remembering were all between St. Anthony Blvd and Walnut St. up on the north end by the golf course.

are we using a new thread for this winter?
if not:
LRT trail is full of ice ruts and i took a major spill, even on cross tires. not worth it. greenway did not look much better but i did not bother to confirm. if you didn't already know--stay off the trails until some of this ice melts. what a bummer of a first snow.

franklin ave bridge seems plowed to pavement, or at least snow is gone. E River Pkwy trail is passable but caution should be used on icy ruts.

I did it today with 2" studded tires. YMMV

Diagonal trail is filled with icy ruts from New Brighton Blvd to Larpenteur...
Side streets in upper NE are completely iced over, but rideable

The Greenway from 18th to the turn off for the Hiawatha bike trail was rutted with ice and slush. (seemed better than the morning, though--stuff was melting a little).
The Hiawatha bike trail up to 15th Ave. turn off was less icy and more slushy than the GW.
The 10th Ave bridge had slush and ice piled in both bikelanes.

West bank is mostly clear at least from Washington ave. to Hennepin ave. Stone Arch bridge is fine. Roads are clear on Hennepin ave. bridge, but all the slush has been piled in the bike lanes. Side walks on the bridge are compressed snow: not slippery, but quite bumpy.

The plow leaves tire tracks in the snow which take longer to melt and sometimes turn to ice. The tracks are right where I usually ride. Having them covered up with snow will make it interesting.
