Is it possible to bike up to the VA Light rail station?

Is it 43rd Avenue over Crosstown? Or is that frontage road better to jump on at 34th?
I live around 66th and Portland, so I am hoping there is a way to get there more directly through the airport (doubt it) like at that road east of 66th and cedar.

It's very bikeable to the VA center. I would suggest crossing the Crosstown on Bloomington Ave. and then working your way to to it on the MPLS side of the Crosstown, though. I would take 56th or 54th Street going east. Something like this would work. You could try and stay on the south side of the Crosstown and cross it on 34th or 42nd, but if it's possible (I don't think you can get from Cedar Ave. to the frontage road) it would be a loud ride right next to the freeway. My route takes you through residential streets for the most part.

Jump across that pedestrian bridge across Cedar just south of Nokomis. That should save you.... 200 yards :P

Not to side track you thread but on the accessible side is the only place to lock up out by the light rail? I try to look every time I'm there but haven't seen much else for a better option.

No - there are more bike racks close to the main entrance of the VA building. I visited my brother-in-law there when he had his hip replaced so I know that there are two or three permanent bike racks north of the main entrance between the parking lot and the main building entrance.

Thank you for the great advice and info. I will use that bike rack and yes even that pedestrian bridge, since i hate that intersection at the south tip of Nokomis. Funny, I never thought to actually use that bridge ever before.

This will be my car-free connection to the light rail whenever I'm at home, and not at my girlfriend's (who lives by the 38th station). Thanks again! I'll be using this for sure a few times before summer

Ok so since my last post on this thread I have found the bike racks and used them many times since going car free. Only issue is why the hell does the VA have all those awesome bike lockers (right by the door closest to the bike racks) that are hardly used? Why are they for employees only? How about checking out a key to atleast get some use out of them? Never very many occupied lockers. Not sure if there are any others on here who frequent the VA. Probably not many after seeing so few bikes locked up there everytime I go. If anyone does ride here often and would like to approach whoever at the VA with me about making this happen let me know.

Are you sure they are not Metro Transit bike lockers? Those get rented out by MTC rather than the VA. Check this out.

Yeah, these ones are right by the building not the ones out by the light rail. I've talked to the info/ VA police desk about them.

They don't sign them out to non-employees? Hmmm. . . I guess from a security standpoint, it makes a little bit of sense, but it's unfortunate anyway. I had one for a little while, but it didn't make sense to keep it because I had to go way out of my way to put my bike in it when the rack that I used was sheltered and more convenient. Plus I scraped the crap out of my knuckles on the rough edges of the door on multiple occasions.

Now that I think about it, I think they collect the keys even from employees in, like, November, and don't check them out again until April.

The best place to park is on the north side of the building where there's a sheltered area with bike racks. They're pretty crappy racks, but I've been riding down there for 4 years and have never had a problem, just don't lock to the end of the rack.

P.S. Make sure your obey all the traffic signs on the VA campus. The cops will give you an earfull (or a ticket) if they catch you rolling a stop sign.
