Thought this was interesting.

Quote:
Lauren Denitzio (The Measure [SA], Black & Red Eye) has published an essay on her experiences with sexism in the punk scene via I Live Sweat. In the piece, Denitzio touches on quite a few issues within the subject, including jokes made in poor taste, name calling and other derogatory gestures

Dear people:

There are awesome individuals out there, and not all of them have something similar to you between their legs.

So stop being sexist assholes, and start seeing people as individuals for a change.

KTHX.

I'm reading a great book right now that was published in 1999 called "Pretty in Punk". It's a socialogical study by a feminist on women in the punk community adopting male gender characteristics and mixing feminity and masculinity. (wearing a miniskirt, driving a motorcycle, wearing pretty make-up and beating the shit out of somebody) It's very interesting. It coincides with a lot of my own experiences in the riot grrrl movement of that era. (NOFX and Kathleen Hannah duking it out over the airwaves.. NOFX's don't call me white was in response to Bikini Kill's "white boy")..

Thanks for posting this DRB and your responses Snakshak and Dasunt. I admit it feels kind of weird to me when more male identified people respond to a WTF topic then WTF identified people.. I don't know why, but it does, this will cause me to do some more introspection on why I feel this way.

Y'all know the punk scene hasn't been around for like 30 years, right?

I hear what she's saying in that article, but I guess I just don't identify as punk so I can't *really* relate. I mostly think every "scene" is a boys' club and that we (all people) have to fight sexism everywhere, every day, because it is kind of the default way of thinking. I feel like in a lot of situations it is believed that the best man will always be better than the best woman, and that we have to accept that.

I just read that "masculinity is as damaging to men as femininity is to females."

The macho "I need to beat the shit out of people and ride a motorcycle to be a man" mentality is just as fucked up as the "Pretty makeup and miniskirts make me a woman" mentality. The fucked up part is that hardly any men actually identify with what masculinity is supposed to be, and hardly any women want to be in the kitchen making sandwiches or whatever they are supposed to be doing.

Yo, dudes: I'll be your ally and call out macho bullshit for marginalizing and threatening the way you want to live if you be an ally for me and call out sexist bullshit that makes me feel unsafe.

Maybe some people want to speak up about the last time they witnessed or felt sexism at a concert/ in the punk scene?

I'm reading this zine right now "Identity Crisis: Punk Community and Subculture" (links to an Ontario radio show blog)

I've only read a couple interviews in it, but so far it's been soooo good! Let me know if you're interested in a copy! I think it's relevant to the cycling subculture/community too.

Quote:
Its a zine that compiles many interviews, and beautiful portraits of the people being interviewed about what Punk Culture and Punk Community means to them, and has meant to them in the past. There are many discussions about RiotGrrl, disability and identity, sexual assault, patriarchy, queer identity, and spirituality.

This one time I went to a Tori Amos concert and a female security guard didn't believe that I wasn't lost or there to cause trouble.

Some of my more recent expieriences:
Last year, bouncing souls, Triple Rock, teenage girl (on some stuff and totally out of it) and , was crowd surfing, she got groped, lost her wallet, had someone grab her boobs, guys in front of me thought it was awesome her ass was sooooo tight. (this happens ALL THE TIME)

Nekromantix show a few months ago, guy shows up wearing a t-shirt proclaiming "I <3 tattooed bitches, get a tattoo bitch" .....

Bad Religion show a few years ago-- I got into a fist fight with some guy who had been smacking around his girlfriend, then smacked the girl next to me in the head so he could jump over her and get in front of her. (it was super crowded). No one even bothered to help the girl up (except for me).. She was 14, it was her first show and she was video taping it. Her camera got trampled, she got trampled on.

Now, I'm short but pretty solid so I'm able to hold my own space at a show fairly well. I went to see Gang of Four with a friend of mine a few weeks ago, she's a recent cancer survivor. She's shorter than I am, and a bit more fragile. We were pretty close to the front and had a good view, until we got shoved back by groups of guys who were angling to get closer. Instead of spending the show enjoying the gyrations of 60 year old rockers.. we spent it jumping up and down trying to see over the heads of all the guys in front of us, and elbowing them to make sure we kept our spots.
