For the record, steel that is only a few degrees below red-hot is not something you want shoved up against the inside of your wrist. Example:  The Burn by AthenaBikes, on Flickr It made sizzlin' noises. It smelled a bit like pork. It hurt. I left behind some skin on the tube when I yanked my arm away. You should always put a bit of yourself into your craft, yes?

OUCH.
An old classmate grabbed a bar of iron in shop class, not realizing that it was just out of the forge. Still in the ~1000º range. Charred skin.
RE: Pork. Guy I know cut himself in such a way that there was a large "flap" of flesh/skin hanging off that healed up without reattaching itself. Cut it away and decided to try cooking/eating it. Said he tasted like pork.

I've heard the pork thing before too. The similarities in flesh are probably why we use pig parts in heart valve replacement surgery and stuff. Do apes taste like pork too?
Were you wearing gloves at the time? Most welding gloves I've seen extend past the wrist for just such occurrences (and to keep out the sparks).

Embarrassingly enough. I once lost a pretty large flap of skin off my hand due to a high- temp glue gun bonding fiberglass panels on our HS's supermileage car (after all that damn MIG welding, a GLUE GUN?!?) Hurt like the dickens and looked about like that. Keep the vaseline and a bag of chit'lins (for comedic value) handy at all times, and good luck with the recovery!

I only wear gloves when working with a TIG welder -- I've gotten sunburned on an exposed patch of skin from the UV flux before. For brazing work, I need my manual dexterity, so I go gloveless.
