DAustin wrote: oh yeah i forgot to mention, for everyone who is still concerned about the trek bike, it has already been arranged to be delivered this week. the frame was actually finished on Thursday July 8th (graphics & clear coating). So I brought it back to the studio to cure and take some photos of the finished paint job. The coating I put on it to protect the paint needs 4-5 days to cure (dry) fully and harden before it can be handled. otherwise, the paint job will be wrecked.
it is impossible to "cancel" a paint order after a bike has already been painted. Kyle was aware of the status of his frame, as I gave him progressive updates. So when he asked for a full refund and the frame back, he already knew it had been stripped, primed, and painted. the graphics were partially done, and then it just needed clear coating after that. So i am not sure how to "cancel" an order for materials already on the frame, and many labor hours worked to achieve this.
He had said back in this forum awhile ago that he was willing to take the frame back and pay you for the work you had done, ie if it was 95% complete, give him the bike back and keep 95% of what he had paid you. I am really confused why you are still trying to finish this bike rather then just returning it. Also you say in the above paragraph that the bike cannot be handled while the clear coat cures, yet you transported the bike to your studio ??? You say so many things that don't make sense and why aren't you doing the painting in your studio anyway, isn't that the point of a studio...

Very nice photos Dominick, I have no reason to doubt your workmanship.
However... how do any of us know that this is Kyle's bike, or even a Trek bike at all? A close up of the fork and frame shows the nice shiny paint job, but it could be ANY bike. It doesn't prove anything, at least in my mind.
I look forward to a quick resolution to this, as you have said. We're all waiting.

For clarification, I'm not discounting the quality of Dominick's work. The paint I saw first-person was great quality and clearly a great deal of time and effort went into the process. I'm also not discounting the possibility of shipping my frames to him in the future -- while it's not a thought I'm currently willing to entertain, if it comes to a point where his reliability is there and his turnaround times are more like Kvale's 3-4 weeks rather than 8+ weeks, then I am certainly going to give his shop another look.

Happy you got your bike back. Not sure what I think about the lettering or the fact that he put his name on your bike.

Glad your bike is back, and I agree with fafnir on the lettering... For future references: water slip decals are awesome for recreating old lettering, logos, etc.

I can see why D. Austin was reluctant to return it to you. The yellow logo\lettering...yikes!
Base coat looks pretty though. Glad you got your bike back.

hey, folks, i don’t care how bad the lettering is. i have Melanie back! that was the goal of this whole thing and I thought the day would never come! I’m so grateful for the help of Lora Pabst and Jim Gehrz of the Star Tribune, for the help of the mpls and stp police, and for the help of my family and friends. I could not have done it myself.
(and while I was hoping for a dark blue color instead, I agree with kn_mpls and reptile: the green does look really nice with the clear coat over it. I bet Dominick could make a good living doing basecoating of frames once he gets the communications side of his business improved. maybe using plastic reproduction decals as graphics would be the answer for him instead of trying to replicate them free-hand...)
