The Wire -- I own all five seasons, and they stand up to (perhaps even require) repeated viewings.
Just got through the latest series from Simon and Burns (responsible for The Wire): Generation Kill. Dramatizes the book by the Rolling Stone embedded reporter during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. If you like the Wire, you'll probably think Generation Kill is worthwhile, too.
And now for something completely different: Monty Python's Flying Circus: The Complete Series (14 discs, 45 episodes).
Start or fill out a collection of the master directors: Hitchcock, Kubrick, Scorsese, David Lynch, etc.
Les Triplettes de Belleville Every biker or animation fan should own this one.

+1 to The Wire. Some of the best TV I've ever watched. Making my way to the end of Season Three now, and looking forward to the next two.
I *Heart* Huckabees, Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and loads of documentaries...
Man On A Wire Yes Men B.I.K.E. Bush's Brain
And then watching TPT/PBS.

a key thing for dvd's that youre purchasing is re-watchability. i commonly make the mistake of buying a good movie, that i rarely feel like watching. netflix or internet is better for that type of stuff.
comedy: idiocracy, beer fest, life of brian, vacation, kiss kiss bang bang(so good), shawn of the dead, pinnaple express,
tv: lost, battle star galactica, arrested development, 30 rock, bbc the office,
other junk: fist of legend, ong bak, almost any zombie movie, the descent, spag. westerns, yeah right, invader zim, nausicaa, vampire hunter d bloodlust
