Just an FYI that they have a UMPD sitting over by the Pleasant St. circle and Pillsbury stopping bikers for rolling that stop sign. He pulled someone over and then like 10 more bikers blasted that stop sign and said to stop at the sign or else they were going to start writing tickets.

He ruined my momentum this morning. Oh well. It's probably for the best, it's gets really obnoxious when classes start.

I'm tempted to say "good" except that I roll through stop signs all the time (of course, when I do so I slow down, look in all directions and I'm not texting, on the cell or listening to music on headphones). What I wish they would crack down on is people riding on the sidewalks. Especially the sidewalks in Dinkytown--you know, the ones with the HUGE white "No Riding Bikes on Sidewalks" printed at each intersection? Or the U needs to stop admitting so many illiterate students.

I'm a UoM grad and I'm unliterate.

Point being, rolling through stop signs is the least annoying thing the students are doing. I saw someone on a bike smack right into a pedestrian the other day (biker fell down, pedestrian was okay). I wish the UMPD would concentrate efforts elsewhere instead of only in places where the bikers are inconvenient/annoying to people in cars.

Hmm, I rolled that sign today but didn't notice the cop there. Musings:

Biking in U of M gets more annoying every year. What should happen is U of M should stop admitting so many students. I had a biker nearly smack into me this morning.

I went through there this morning--the UMPD officer was telling bikers to stop at the stop sign and yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. He wasn't writing tickets, but he was standing in the intersection and loudly directing bikers to stop. Ruined my momentum, too, but I turn right, and I usually have to wait for peds, anyway--at least since school started.

Thanks for the warning. I usually treat that sign like a yield sign, like most bikers. I'll be on the lookout for the po-po today.

IMO - what's even more annoying is the proliferation of Vespa-like scooters on campus, piloted by braindead 18-21 year olds. I yelled at two idiots on University the other day who were scootering up around stopped traffic via the bike lane. F--ers.

They were wearing backpacks labeled "U of M Volleyball" and it was in the vicinity of the sports pavilion.

Maybe the cops should start worrying about scooters before they worry about the errant cyclists on campus.

No one on campus knows how to use any mode of transportation. Bikes, cars, trucks, scooters, skateboards, whatever. Even walking is too much for a lot of campus-goers to figure out. It's really hard to single out any one group as worse than another.

True, but IMO if their mode of transport is equipped with a motor, they're inherently more dangerous (while being equally stupid)

Truth. That's why the campus drivers scare me so much.

There really ought to be better education about scootering. Someone mentioned in another thread that they even saw a scooter salmon in a bike lane once. Sigh.

I hate to say it, but I kind of like this. It's what the bikes _should_ be doing. And without even tickets, just warnings?

Awesome.
