I've carried my DSLR on my bike and I've never had a problem with it. On the road I've worn it around my neck and across my back all day long taking photos and I've never had a problem.

I've seen several people doing bike tours with DSLR's, and what most of them seem to do is to get a handlebar bag along the lines of the Ortlieb (there are several clones on the market, but I'd want the real thing - it really is better). Ortlieb even makes an insert for cameras. This isn't a water-proof bag, but for anything short of dropping it in a river you should be fine. Certainly, I've never had a rain storm that could get through mine, and I've been out in rains that should have.

I have this:

http://www.natcam.com/natcamera/spec_sheet.html?catalog[name]=Think-Tank-Streetwalker-Backpack-Bags-and-cases&catalog[product_guids][0]=89532436-f217-41aa-baea-c991403f5e9f

Holds plenty of gear to get the job done, plus it has a waterproof shell it comes with. The pack is sturdy and you can strap it down nice and tight so it doesn't move around a lot. The back is actually pretty well ventilated too so you won't be pouring sweat all over your camera.

Now is the perfect time to buy with National Camera's tent sale too, that is when I got mine actually....

I need it too. I tried to make something similar but it sucked. That mount looks nice and sturdy.

According to my inside source that mount costs about thirteen bucks so I ordered it and will post the crappy pictures I take with it when it arrives.

A company F-stop probably makes what you are looking for. Imagine backpacking backpacks, with special camera accommodations.

Do they make DSLR-form back packs? They should.

Whenever I carry eggs, or sensitive electronics, I tend to carry them on my back, for shock absorption. But I'd be interested in what you end up doing.

A bicyclist who works at National Camera Exchange told me NatCam had tested many shock absorbing systems and found none of the expensive setups works as well as 3 layers of bubble wrap. 1" diameter bubbles, not the little stuff

I don't have a DSLR but my Panasonic FZ150 SuperZoom rides in a bubble wrap lined handlebar bag.

I don't think I would trust an expensive camera in that mount. Not a chance. Every time you go over a crack in the road or trail the camera gets a smacking jar. It can't be good for the camera or the lens mounts.

I'd rather just use the strap and put in around my shoulder and neck sideways. I've ridden with some pretty expensive camera equipment in some pretty precarious ways and I'm saying not a chance with that thing. No way.

I bought on of those. I wouldn't leave an expensive camera on it for the reasons jitterjepp mentioned, but it is very stable and handy. If you clamp it over your bar tape you get some shock absorption.

It's good enough to leave small point & shoot cameras mounted, or for DSLRs just attach it when you're ready to take a picture.

Nice. I like both of those.
