Any idea if the lake (or the shores, anyway) is still iced over and safe to travel on?

Another great thing to do up there is to visit the Sea Caves in winter when they are like fairy castles of ice. I won't even try to describe them. Here's some pix, but without people in the caves you can't see the enormous scale.

No. The ice is no longer safe to travel on.

Chec k with the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore before making the trek up to do this. It's about once every three years that there is enough ice in that area.

I went on this trip seeking Butt City and answers to the questions brought up by the Senator Butthole Johnson years ago. Butt City, it turns out, is still in shambles and will perpetually be so.
