GO IF YOU CAN!!!! this is TONIGHT! Beth E. was recently in a hit and run accident last Thursday 11/5. She’s been in the hospital making some good recovery from broken ribs, collar bones, clavicles, along with many other painful injuries. She’s going to be pretty immobile for a long time, and it would be awesome if you could help come together and get her some $$$ to get her back on her feet. We’ll have drinks, food, a raffle, and a silent auction to help get money together. Let me know if there is anything you can do to help out in this regard. Contact me: Lisa Vonderharr – Lisa.vonderharr@gmail.com – 612-916-4420. DETAILS: Monday, November 23, 2009 – 7pm West Bank Social Center From the flier: "BEthEFIT" broken ribs + broken collarbones + broken clavicles = lots of billes 7pm Monday Novermber 23rd West Bank Social Center 501 Cedar Ave Minneapolis DRINKS, FOOD, RAFFLE, SILENT AUCTION $5 donation at the door MORE if you can afford it! THANKS!~!!! "Hit + Run = NO FUN"

Should we be keeping an eye out for a certain motor vehicle? Sucks that she has to pay for somebody else's lack of ethics.

My sympathy goes out to Beth E. Broken ribs take a long time to heal. . . I hate to point out a minor flaw in the details in such a grave situation, but "collar bone" is the common term for clavicle. Did she really break both of them? Ouch!

yeah - i noticed that about the clavicle and collar bones... basically, she ended up with so much broken stuff that repetition is definitely warranted!!!!
i am nearly 100% sure i cracked me a rib or two at the state cyclocross race this past weekend - on warmup, of all things - hurts like all freakin' get-out. and, that's NOTHING compared to her getting run over by the truck.
driver was caught, by the way.... multiple offenses yada yada yada.... terrible terrible record.
hope everyone has a safe day!

If the driver was caught, shouldn't the medical expenses be billed 3rd party to the driver? Also, she should find a good lawyer and sue the shit out of this little... shit.

I'll be out of town for the benefit, but I'm donating some wine for the silent auction - come bid on it and help Beth out!
Regarding the billing of medical expenses - well, that's true if the driver has insurance - which I don't know if this one did or not. If they didn't, well, in a better world they'd still be responsible for the bills, but in real life, the bills go to the person who got run over, who then has to sue the person who ran them over...

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that there aren't any costs that Beth prolly have to cover, at least for now. I just meant the driver should be court ordered to foot the bill... and have his license revoked... and tossed in a Soviet gulag...

Garnished wages? Repossession of property? If the driver gets off with no repercussions, I would be quite irate.
yuck.

yuck. Probably won't get off (more likely lose license) but if they don't have any money then it'll be hard for Beth to get her bills paid by that person. Friend got into a bike accident many years ago and got a TBI. The driver was not insured. He lost his front teeth, and had many medical bills. The driver lost his license but my friend ended up remaining responsible for his bills.

This is why we really really need to start up an insurance program for bicycle riders. Hell, Australia has it, why don't we? http://www.cyclecover.com.au/index.htm

While it is great the cycling community can and has pull together to help out a fallen comrade, it sucks that we have to.
Hope the fundraising goes well.

Most cyclists probably have automobile insurance, which should cover them in case of a bike accident.
