The bridge deck was strongly shaking under my feet. Video of vibrating sabo bridge cablesIf that keeps happening I wouldn't be surprised to see another cable anchor fail.

Being cut in half by snapped high tension cables and then riding the crumbling bridge down to Hiawatha to be hit by speeding semis and minivans is still preferable to crossing at that fucking light. edit: had to add Dr. Z.

Works for me! Less people acting acting like they don't know what a line is at that intersection.

The planters have been moved off the path now. And not a moment too soon... those things were dangerous.

Small victories, I guess. I came around the pylon headed west and was surprised by the planters, which seemed much closer than before, and aligned so it would have been easy to run into them. That was after stopping for a long time to watch the cables vibrate and feel the bridge deck rumbling underneath. What IS it with those cables?? The vibrations were huge!!

Luckily they painted a little safety island around the planters. Whew, who knows what would have happened without that!

I'm not an expert but I predict that when the final report goes public, it says that nothing needs to be changed, the design is fine, and the cause of the failure was just a defective part or two, needing to be remade and replaced. The StarTribune naturally tried to stir up controversy about incompetent engineers or crooked contractors, and the 'comments' included rants from 'experts" about obvious design errors. But I'll bet the designers were actually axperienced bridge engineers well aware of wind and the vibrations it causes.

Predictions? I'll bite.
I predict that the attachment design is faulty, and that new attachment points on the pylon will need to be designed, fabricated, and installed.
It won't be a huge deal, but it will take time, involve another bridge closing this fall (the over/under is for three weeks), and let the pot continue to be stirred.
I hope I'm wrong.
