This video on 'shared lanes' is EXCELLENT. Clear as a bell. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... 7imwANUHDw I love the way it shows the cyclist staying in the lane on Bryant while the car waits for an opportunity, then pulls out and around. Instead of riding my @ss at a distance of 8 feet until I cave in and squeeze into the door lane, which is the standard procedure today. The video was obviously shot last year - unfortunately that green paint is quickly disappearing.

On bike boulevards, just take the lane if you need to, have a right to, and f*ck the cars.

Sounds good in practice but cars will still try to go around (very closely as there is not a lot of room on some stretches) and will look at you like " Why the hell are you in the middle of the road?" Or pass you as you're slowing down for a stop sign, run the stop sign, and continue driving down the bike boulevard for six blocks. Or they honk at you and accelerate, swerving around you just as you're about to turn onto the Greenway ramp on Bryant. Or I could keep listing recent run-ins with cars on Bryant... The videos are nice and clear but I fear that the people who really should watch them and learn how to drive appropriately in the presence of bikes will not watch them and do not care. Then again, I'm sure many people have never seen these road markings before, have no idea what they mean, and would appreciate an explanation.

Sounds good in front of a keyboard. In reality, don't let drivers bully you into giving up your right to the road on a bike boulevard unless you are really in danger. Be courteous, but also be firm in your right to the road. And bail if you going to be killed.

I've started over typing responses to this thread several times and now I'm just going to ask this:
Am I riding the same Bryant Ave you are because I do not have these problems ever and I ride it a lot. Are you referring to a particular stretch? Perhaps South of 35th?

it would be nice if these videos seemed to go anywhere outside of the bike community. Obviously time and effort went into these, but where are they shown?
The biggest issue I see ongoing is a general ignorance among drivers who don't also bike. I don't blame them really for not knowing, drivers training mostly hasn't covered rules around cyclists (I know we didn't discuss it at all 18 years ago when I was going through). These videos are too long for TV commercial placement.
Seems the city would be better off using the production money into billboards, as they are seen by the whole mix of drivers.

Nice. Hope this continues. I have a feeling most cyclists who go to this page will watch them, as will drivers already sympathetic to cyclists. I also have a feeling that drivers who don't like cyclists will just pass it by. But it's a start. Gotta love Minneapolis for trying to be a good city for cyclists.
