I was looking forward to the U of M bikeway completion this year. The poject will provide a good route from the transitway to the River Road, bypassing Dinkytown: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/public-works/cip/uofm-trail/It is a complicated project, involving BNSF, the U of M, and the city of Minneapolis. While there has been construction activity in the area, no work on the bikeway has commenced and the project has been delayed. According to the Paul Ogren, project manager, Quote: [a] new project layout has been completed that keeps the bike path completely off of BNSF property (i.e. all on U of M property). That layout has been approved by the TLC (Transit in Livable Communities) board and is being reviewed by the U of M (various divisions/departments). I hope to have their review done – quickly. Depending on the layout review/comment status – will determine the upcoming schedule. Best case, April 2012 for start of constrcution.

This project has been coming "next year" for almost 20 years. Negotiations with the railroads has always been the sticking point. Now that they've decided to go without railroad involvement I think "next year" might really be when it happens.

Quote: new project layout has been completed that keeps the bike path completely off of BNSF property (i.e. all on U of M property). Why didn't they just do that in the first place, fer Denny's sake. Indeed. Hope this finally gets done next year.

UPDATE: I have seen evidence of possible construction activity in the area lately. Locate flags and paint are down, and pink paint marking "CL" (centerline) is in the rough area of the bikeway. In addition, there's a whole pile of rebar and blocking on the west end of bridge 9. It looks like some work on the tunnel under 35W bridge may start soon, too.

Tell me more about the tunnel... Seems a little overkill, with the W River Pkwy right there. But I'm not sure I understand where the tunnel will be. Moreover, I don't bike the U daily, so I could be missing something. edit, with a closer look at Google Maps, it appears the tunnel is there (is that right?) and we need to put it to service as a bike facility. http://goo.gl/maps/ZP0Fw Tunnel in the red box?

That looks like one side--here's the other, right by West Bank Office Building: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=44.976753,-93.246428&spn=0.003075,0.003449&t=h°=180&z=18When the 35W bridge was rebuilt a few years ago, Minneapolis put some money into a tunnel for a future project. Right now the entrances are bricked up, but I believe they are going to open them up. I could be wrong--there's some infrastructure work scheduled for 10th Avenue bridge, too.

The 2008 thread on the tunnel is here: http://www.mplsbikelove.com/forum/viewt ... 35W+tunnel It was visible briefly, and I did get a couple photos of it, but it's been bricked up for some 5 years now.

Well, it appears I was incorrect. The rebar and blocking was for work on the supports for Bridge 10. The tunnel doesn't seem to have any work at all.
As far as the bikeway, there was quite a bit of underground work right by the old mine sciences building, but no trail work, other than some stakes and centerline marks.

One of my coworkers was at a City of Minneapolis construcution meeting, and the bikeway and tunnel work will be done this construction season. The work last year was in preparation for it.

I work right near the exit of the tunnel, so he asked me if I was looking forward to riding through it.
