If I had a dollar for every time I heard that and it didn't turn out to be true, I could buy a couple cases of good beer.

Products get expanded into different markets, get developed, get copied and changed, and get cheaper. How it is is not necessarily how it will be.

It's not to say it will necessarily succeed, but current price and design aren't necessarily a barrier to a product succeeding. If there's a market for them, you'll see copies being produced in china or wherever and sold online for <$100, possibly with changeable CO2 cartridges and swappable air bags in designer colors.

People always assume that because they are not the target market for a certain product that it is stupid or won't work.

Here is a marketing video of real people 'wrecking' with the Hodving:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAgYKaYQ8Wc&feature=player_embedded#!

This video addresses sound/noise of deployment and I was wondering about the hood staying inflated for secondary impacts (it does). I would like to see some research on the protection offered from the Hodving versus traditional helmets. My feeling is that the Hodving will offer better protection.

I had the unfortunate opportunity to watch a women go over her handle bars on Lyndale at Lake last year. She had a normal helmet, but landed face-first, the helmet offered her no benefit (broken teeth, nose... not good). The Hodving has a large 'visor' that should offer better protection than the standard helmet (IMO).

Yes, it would be hot on the neck in July, but a helmet over your head is hot too...

This will not be for everybody. It is not for mountain bikers or roadies. But would be great for commuting and city riding. Europeans will love this.

Price point needs to come down (and it will).

FWIW I'm excited by this product and what it can do for biking.

Found an answer to my own question:

Quote:
Folksam tested 12 CE-approved helmets and found that the Hövding recorded impacts of 65 Gs at this speed, whereas none of the competition achieved under 200 Gs of force, suggesting that when it comes to direct impact forces, the collar performs almost three times better than conventional helmets.

This helmet is now standard equipment on all Segways.

Would it deploy if you popped a wheelie?
