This is a long-shot, but has anyone done a trip to Perham (or thereabouts) from the cities? I am leaning towards using the google maps bike suggested route.
Any other better bike route mapping sites out there I should look at?
I currently plan to camp at Lake Maria State Park and Osakis, which makes for super mellow riding, with the longest day being 80-something miles. Even with wind, fully-loaded (the bike, not me...until after setting up camp) it should be pretty casual.
I am bringing my brother in law along, and he is not the world's most fit biker, so I don't want any huge curve-balls thrown our way that will ruin it for him.

Paging ToddLange. His parents live there; he might have a route for you. PM him if he doesn't show up in this thread.

Strange; it ate all my route lines. http://goo.gl/maps/PA4ze is close to the actual north-bound route. I stayed at Shady Oaks Campground on Smith Lake just a few miles west of Osakis. You might also look at Lake Carlos State Park and Glendalough State Park.

Thanks for the heads-up on Shady Oak Campground. They were great, and Log Cabin Pizza delivered to us after 91.5 miles into that 20+ MPH wind (with lots of gusts).
They had a sweet shower area that nobody but us used because they all have showers in their RVs.
The Friday night storms were pretty epic at Lake Maria State Park as well. A hammock is perfect for most camping I do, but it was swinging pretty hard that night.

I grew up there but I haven't attempted riding up there by bike. I have ridden from Minneapolis to Lake Itasca following the Mississippi and the Paul Bunyan trail.

Day two was 92 miles, fully loaded, straight into a 20 mph headwind all day. My brother in law was HURTING.
