That is Dr. Livewombat to you, he didn't go through 4 years of Livewombat medical school to be called Mr. Thank you very much!

She. The wombat is most decidedly a she.

Just ride however fast you want. Watch out for kids, watch out for fruit booters and magna mavericks. While I admire all the free time you guys seem to have to write letters, your concerns are on the bottom of the list of things your elected representatives care about. Like you obey the speed limit to the tee if and when you drive a car. Few people do it faithfully. If you get caught, the only thing you are guilty of is being caught. Pay your damn fine and move on, faster than the posted speed limit.
+1

(+2 if you run from the cops)

P.S. If anyone sees a cop enforcing the speed limit,
immediately post his/her location so we can all go
break the law... or, better yet, get a big peloton
going and all bust by at once... or, even better,
see who can get busted going the fastest (The
Speeding Bike Game thread).

Seriously, with all the obstacles already present
on the trail (read: all other trail users but me),
what's one more thing to watch out for?

This is mostly a liability issue -- if a ped takes
it from a biker going too fast, Three Rivers can't
get sued because they can at least argue the biker
was disobeying posted signage.

i don't live in mpls anymore, but i don't get the argument that because we have to deal with a lot of crap already that it's okay for officials to pile on more stupid laws.

Sure there are worse things, and maybe this isn't at the top of your agenda, but that's no reason to let it slide. People will start thinking that 10 mph is a reasonable speed for bikes to go, and who knows what comes next after that...

The problem is that we are getting spooled up over what is essentially a non-issue. Every says they know someone who got a ticket riding over 10 mph. Scan a copy of said ticket and post it. This whole things sounds like urban legend to me. I have sped past the MPLS parks patrol on Cedar Lake trail, doing at least 20 and they didn't bat an eye, they didn't yell slow down, nothing, zilch, nada. Show me the proof so I can continue to speed around on my bike and wait to get caught.

You and me both!!
God-I hope you're right about the urban legend part! I've been speeding around those parts for almost a year now! Although, sometimes around the lakes anyway, it's just not worth the frustration. Yesterday was a case in point. I tried to ride Harriet and there was just no possible way!!! It was kind of sad at one point-I spotted a guy on this beautiful Trek that was made to fly on-I was behind him and noted he was going about 8.6 mph. Followed him for a few minutes and then couldn't take it anymore. Got off the "train" and zoomed home!

I got one and it was no urban legend. It was two years ago and I didn't save it to show off to others. It hasn't caused me to stop "speeding," I just don't use the trails around the lakes when I am biking for transportation versus recreation.

This is a very worthly issue for letter writing. They all are. It only takes 10 minutes to craft a nice letter - if I can spend 10 minutes writing on this site, I can certainly take 10 minutes to write my city council person. And, when I have, I have always gotten a response. See http://www.mplsbikelove.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2759 this post.

I don't think this is even about the speed limits, so much as letting our needs be known, showing that we care, and that investments in bicycle amenities is not a wasted investment. If we want great bike infrastructure, we have to continue to be involved in its creation in a positive way. So, there! :P

I just got a call from the City of Minneapolis Bicycle Coordinator Shaun Murphy, who contacted the Park Dept to find out what's the deal.

He just got a reply that said that the painting of the 10mph stencil on the two trails does not reflect a change of policy on those facilities and was placed there in error. They are working to have them removed from the trails.

Cool.

http://www.threeriversparkdistrict.org/trails/trails_paved.cfm seems to suggest a 15 mph limit. A lot better than 10, but...

I received this reply to my original email today:

Quote:
Karl-

Most strange! Thank you for pointing this out to me. I will ask if the
Bicycle Advisory Committee knows of this. This would serve to make our
trails almost useless as a commuting or exercise opportunity for the
serious cyclist.

If it is only at critical junctions where trails merge or cross, it
would make sense. If it is for the entire route, then it seems
pointless.

Gary Schiff
City Council Ward 9

Gary CC'd Donald Pflaum (a city employee that is frequently the project manager for lots of bicycle improvement projects), and Donald quickly added this to the exchange:

Quote:
The MPRB did this by mistake when they re-striped the trail (both the
Cedar Lake Trail and Kenilworth Trail are maintained by the MPRB). They
are working to correct this.
