Ummmhaley, I have a metal plate in my wrist from tripping and falling. I wasn't running. I was walking. I just put my hands out to break my fall and landed wrong. It's a very common method of breaking a wrist. It's so common that it has an acronym even: FOOSH - fall on an outstretched hand. So at least you were on a bike and probably going faster than walking speed. I hope you heal quickly. ETA: Advice. 1. Make sure you have pain meds. Your wrist will probably still hurt, but it shouldn't hurt bad enough that you are in agony. 2. I found that after the cast came off, placing something lightweight in my hand helped to stretch the muscles and tendons back out. Something like an empty water bottle. YMMV on #2, but I found it useful. For anyone in a similar situation, as soon as you break your wrist (or any other bad fracture/joint fracture), immobilize it as soon as you can. I think I put some rolled up newspaper around mine. And seek medical treatment ASAP. Sometimes joints have important nerves and blood vessels going through them, if you pinch them, you could have a much more serious injury than a broken bone.

Oh no My dude fell this summer when he hit a small crack also. Broken radius and disjointed the fuck out of his ulna. I think slow falls can be even worse than fast falls. Heal quickly, and good luck with your finals!

Heal up! I've fallen on my wrists before-that was when I was signalling with left hand and reflexively braked with the right until I locked up and flew out of my bike. No breaks but a scarred left knee.
You're not left-handed are you? If you were I imagine that'd be a good excuse to say "I can't write essays or fill in a scantron right now..."

Oy vey!
If I recall correctly, student disability services usually has ways to accomodate students who may have a disability in their hands. I wonder if medical things like a shattered wrist might be a sort of temporary disability. Now might be a good time to email instructors en masse. I mean, whaddaya gonna do?

yeah, at least bicycling is currently at its least fun for the year. commence long walks! walked to studio this morning, all bundled, trudging through snow with my useless arm dangling. 1 mile, not bad. one prof has given me disability service-type-time for my final. we'll see what the others say this week. can't wait for grad school to be over so i never again have to tell a doctor, 'yeah, i guess i COULD use a note..." so lame. worst part (sorry, cant stop complaining) : cant play piano over xmas while visiting my parents it's the only time all year i get to play! actually the worst part is being in a pissy mood ALL THE TIME now. hopefully i adjust soon and quit it. best part: letting my girlfriend take care of me she zips me into my jacket and puts my backpack on for me, it' s PRETTY ADORABLE.

I sprained my back a few years back and she did everything for me. I think the cutest was the shoe tying. nothing like one grown woman tying the shoes of another grown woman. go team. And heal quick.

went back to the doctor on monday-- I AM MAGICAL. they said it seemed to be healing extremely quickly. like.. it's maybe not even broken? which is awesome. so instead of a hard cast, i got a brace, and i can sort of type and write a little. thank stars! quick healing is apparently my thing.
thanks for the nice comments.

hey there - how's the recovery? i did that playing hockey about two years ago - sucked major ass. i rode a recumbent during cast time - that was awesome - thanks to marcy at freewheel for loaning me her bike-e. let me retain independence.... i could still bike to and from work and even run some errands and a handful of just for fun rides and teaching my bike class. made a huge difference in my tude. bike-e = pretty awesome for the non-bent rider... and the mini is easy to carry up and down stairs one handed... my sweetie was super sweet as well.... hugs!

thanks for the nice comments. Shall we give offerings to the magical tutu? Sorry, I only met you once and you were wearing a tutu, so whenever I read your posts I imagine you wearing it! I assume you're wearing it right now. (Plese don't shatter the illusion. I love tulle.) Glad you're healing up, grrrl!

Karma banked from traffic storm and the Tutu of Healing seems to have worked out for you. Xray pictures are fun (but voluntary disclosure and such...)
