I have to replace my Cross Check frame (the whole bike, actually), and I'm tempted to pick up a Casseroll frame instead of another Xcheck. The Xcheck served me well, but the ride was a little harsher than I would have liked and I never bonded with it like I have with other bikes. Anyone have experience with a Casseroll?

I'm also open to other frame suggestions because I really don't know much about stuff. My requirements are:

- Steel
- Road-ish geometry
- Clearance for at least 700x35 wheels and fenders
- Cool paint job
- Canti brakes
- The more fender/rack/whatever mounts the better.
- Cool paint job

Thanks!

- Dan

I like 700's. 26" wheels on a big frame look weird to me.

You ride smaller than a 56, right?

700c wheels: 56–64cm completes and framesets (64cm in Super Dark Green only)

Is this a new development or have they always had frames that are 700 compatible?

Edit: I ride a 58cm frame.

A car tried to kill me in December. I've made no mention on any of the internets because of pending legal action. I want to post a blood and guts thread sooooo bad.

Pretty sure they've been 700 in those sizes...at least my 58cm LHT from 2009 has 700s

And damn that sucks about your CC...I loved that bike...Hopefully it all works out for you. Glad you are OK, especially since you have a new kiddo in your life!

56CM and up is 700C wheels. I ride a 54, therefore I don't own a LHT.

The only way you are going to know is if you take the bike you are thinking of for a ride.

I test rode a few bikes that I thought I wanted and either hated it or didn't like it enough to buy.

I actually had the shop I bought my Cross check from order it knowing if I didn't like it I wasn't going to buy it. They knew they could sell it if I didn't buy it but I knew right away it was the bike for me.

If I were you, I would find a shop with a casserole on the floor and go for a spin.

I'm actually about to buy a Trek Lane in the next week or so:

http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/cyclocross/steel_cross/lane

Same steel as Surly, I dig the curved seat stays and the sliding dropouts are what got me to choose the Trek over a CC.

My plan is to take off the sora/tiagra group and wheel and use components I have lying around the bike room.

I wholeheartedly agree with you... to a point. While I will go to a shop for a test ride before I buy, I wont know whether the frame is perfect until a few hundred real world miles. A 15 minute jaunt up and down the street won't show me how it rides loaded, or on gravel, or in rain, or how it feels after 85 miles when I'm still 20 miles from home, etc. It won't have my saddle (which I just discovered survived the collision). So I'm hoping to hear people's experiences and opinions to broaden my horizons. Also, there's a small matter of not being able to ride just yet... I did sustain serious injuries a month ago so it'll be a little while longer.

Chef Phil, I considered the same thing with a Marin Four Corners. I decided I'm going frame only because I wouldn't use any of the parts.

The Casseroll is a bit on the plush ride. It feels to me less stiff than a Crosscheck.

The angles are a little slacker than the Asseroll.

or...

The Asseroll doesn't have canti mounts, if that's an issue.

DangHeim likes this bike.

By the way, the new (C)asseroll has canti mounts, just like Surly offers frames for 700c wheels..
