I had a beautiful Klein roadbike for a bit that could only fit 23mm tires. It rattled me apart. Now you can get AL frames with carbon stays and fork that can kill the vibrations, but you pay a premium. For my money, steel for skinny tires. Comfort = longer rides, less wrist and back pain, and most impo(r)tant, continued sexual health. Either way, I doubt you have to worry about durability of any frame material, unless you are Ernest GagnonI happen to love AL for other bike styles. I have a Specialized Tricross (AL frame, carbon seat stays and fork, "zerts" dampening seat stay inserts) and I love how light it is. I feel like I can launch forward from a stop with so little resistance... but I do think that has more to do with the wheels than the frame. What people are saying above makes a lot of sense - get something maybe a little lower end, with a nice wheelset. As you wear things out or come into "extra" cash, replace them with higher end parts, including, eventually, the frame. Or buy an "eBay special" crabon frame for ~$400 and piece it together... cheapo eBay frameSomething a little nicer? GiantCalfee built Lemond

Aluminum is stiffer than steel (or at least every 4130 I've ridden) which is what makes the ride less forgiving. Every steel frame I have I can flex enough to make the chain rub on the front derailleur when it usually doesn't.
Might be diff with other tubes and steel types, but my Redline steel cross bike and my Moonlander both do it.

Instead of getting a whole other bike, just buy yourself a really nice wheel set and slap them on another road bike you already have when you just want to fly about.

Great idea, I love it! I'm limited, because my only road bike is the Kona Dew Drop (daily-commuter). It will not make a great fast bike....

If you take all your commuting Fred gadgets off, get a light wheel set, and maybe some lighter cranks it will make a huge difference. The same frame can ride like a whole new bike.
When I take my rack and fenders off of the Cross Check and borrowed my friend's Shimano Ultegra wheels, I was amazed. I felt like I was riding a more comfortable and heavier Madone. All from the wheels.

+1 My Cross Check's decked out with mostly road bits so it's quick, yet comfy and willing to take a beating.

OK, ok, okay.... Every time I come here with an idea and sound off, and you peoples redirect me. And I'm all, but that's not what I wanted or asked for, so I do what I want. Then, a couple months later, I come back and say I'm dumb and you peoples are were right. I'm going to try to learn my lesson. This winter, I'll start shopping some light/fast wheels and tires for the Dew Drop and report back in the spring when the ice melts off the roads. Like, what's the worst that happens, I have a really nice set of wheels for when I buy a dedicated speed bike?
Thanks for the help!

More aero more better. I've been seeing past generation Zipps pop pretty cheap on Craigslist.

Problem is you gotta "like" Nashbar. Thank you! No problem for me, I've been lucky on these kinda things before... Like it for a while, they get to be a pain, unlike or hide posts.
