I've been thinking about investing in some fat rims for my mtb. Right now I'm riding the stock wheels that came on my Redline, the front being just at the edge of needing to be replaced (after endoing over a leaf-buried rock at Theo earlier this fall). They're not bad, but I like the idea of building up some stiffer wheels that would be able to run lower pressures and really fatten out my footprint.
Anyhoo, I don't know much about 35mm+ rims, so I thought I'd ask if anyone has any experience with them. What are your thoughts? I've looked at the P35s, Salsa Gordos (are these still being made?). What else is available for a 29er? I also like the idea of getting a Krampus fork and rabbit hole rim for the front, but I'm guessing that would set me back a pretty penny.
Thanks!

I think Snowcats come in 29s and are 44mm. There's also Kris Holm rims which are 47mm.

Good stuff, thanks! Love those 47mm rims. Now, to my boat-kata. GIFSoup

I built up a Chris Holm, turned out super Nice and have not had to touch it once. Not the lightest, but strong.

I've been riding a p35 set for 2 seasons now, and they have proven reliable. Also, pretty easy to set up tubeless if that is your thing.

Do you ride a ss mtb? If so, does the fat footprint make for drastically harder pedaling effort? Sorry for the interrogation, I'm curious about how you ride. Thanks! Zombinate: I like the look of the p35s as well. A friend of mine rides p35s and has said that he loves them, but often gets pinch flats while cornering. Have you had any issues with yours?

I actually built a single spotted rear wheel out of it. I was having issues keeping the original wheel trued up. This new wheel eliminated that issue. There is a difference in the foot print from the front to rear. it rides very nice. You could check it out sometime if you would like..

Hey sser - I have a couple questions about the Kris Holm rim...
Do you have the 47mm 29er rim?
Did you buy it locally or online?
Thanks!!

Thanks!! I got it at Hiawatha Cyclery, it's the 29er version. I'm not sure it's the 47mm... It's wide though. Looks twice as wide as the Delgado disc on the front.

Thanks!! FYI, Compulsion Cycles is a locally run shop that can get KH rims in, as well as the nimbus Dominator2, which is pretty wide (42mm) and bombproof, but also a bit heavy. http://www.compulsioncycles.com/
