I found a bike, i posted ads here and on craigslist with no replys or responses. I was considering donating the bike but how long should I wait? It's not an expensive, old roadie but I'm sure it would make someone happy who has no other means of getting around. Just curious on your thoughts.

I'm in the same boat, I've got a small amount of spare space and my own life to live, I figure 3 weeks is plenty of time to notice your bicycle is missing and take a look here and on craigslist and fb and wherever. last time I looked craigslist had more listings for found bikes than it did stolen ones, I guess more people than I imagined just not give a shit when their stuff gets stolen?

If it's the typical rider, and the bike is stolen from a shed or a garage, who says they won't notice it until spring?

Shouldn't you contact the police? The person may have had the bike stolen months ago and have stopped looking on Craigslist, but the police would still have a record of the serial number if it was reported.

When this happened to me, I waited two weeks, then gave the bike to Beau at Penn Cycle, as he's the god of getting bikes back to their owners, and Penn has donation resources as well.

contact the cops. not only would they have the serial on file (if the owner knew it), along with any pics, but when the cops can return an item to its rightful owner it helps their image. I know I have rarely had a good run-in with a cop, EVER, so if they were responsible for returning my bike to me it would definitely increase my respect.
