1. what does the route look like on the 16th?
2. does anyone sell new cotters around here? OR maybe just have access to a proper cotter press?

The reason i ask is a have this brand new to me early 60s somthing huffy sportsman.
It is very much like this one: http://oldbikeblog.blogspot.com/2009/04 ... ished.html

The drivers side chainring crank arm has some play in t and could use a new cotter. It is ridable now but i dont know for how far. IM excited to ride it though. $10 well spent on my part.

$10? You done good.

I have some cheap cotters, the grade D type, and a press. MMRB also has a press.

Bikesmith has me covered. I might need a press though. Ill have to take a closer look.
Id rather not use a hammer and mess somthing up.

yes indeed i did good. Mine has the white grips with the grip shift which still appears to work great through all 3 gears.

I'm totally interested, but I need to find a shifter for my 3 speed hub on this bike that was given to me via bike exchange.

Also, I'm not sure if anyone else has a NiceRide subscription (they are only 40 bucks right now) but I had a fantastic time riding these around - did the nice ride challenge last year and hit all 63 stations within 24 hours without trip fees... I tell you it really opened my eyes to the cities and parts I don't often see.

Sibley or MMRB can get you a shifter.

Bring your bike when you come to get cotters and you can use my press.

BTW I have shifters too.

I am reconning the route for next weeks ride and it looks good. A little sand and gravel but otherwise it is in good shape. Bikesmith - I want to pick up one of those presses from you at some point soon.

broadway is not really bicycle friendly. You might want to take 18th ave, then 15th, to Washington Ave to 8Ave, to Plymouth Bridge instead.

I am not sure what to think about crossing the river into Northeast. I don't like Broadway, either and with the other bridges closed we might just skip it and roll through the industrial part of North along the river, which is not really "scenic" but it's interesting. I crossed the river at the Stone Arch bridge yesterday and rode down the other side for awhile pondering what we would be doing next week because of this. Thanks for the tip.

In other late-breaking news, there will be shorter ride option for those that want to ease into 3-speeding or may be finding that their enthusiasm has exceeded there fitness. Both the longer ride and the shorter ride will be led by experienced and knowledgeable 3-speeders, so no-one will be left behind.

Here's my opinion (FWIW- can't make this ride): http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4418011

-Stone Arch is a great part of any scenic cruise.
-Then you go through St. Anthony Main, followed by Marshall to 13th, which is also scenic.
-Behind Bars is right there on 13th, just in case. Lots of other hip joints there as well.
-5th St. is nice and quiet.
-I prefer 22nd Ave over 18th to get to Stinson. The bike lanes on 18th are useless because they have HUGE gaps in the pavement and they're still completely covered in sand.

(5th St. and 22nd Ave. are considered bike routes by Mpls.)

Hope this helps.

Edit: Crossing Johnson at 22nd can be ugly sometimes. You could always cut to 23rd where there's a light.

Pretty much agree with kn_mpls on that route. Much friendlier.

One alternate route thru NE that you could take is to use the new 18th Ave Bikeway from Marshall to Monroe. When it ends at Monroe, I would continue on 19th or 22nd Ave to Stinson.

According to the newpaper, the weather forecast for Saturday is looking to be partly to mostly sucky, it seems.

Let's stay the course with ride plans, though. The weather pundits have been predicting worse than we've been getting lately - If it's too nasty we'll go for a rain day the weekend after next for the big ride, but we may still want to do a smaller ride this weekend if the weather is bad.

PM me if you want my cell phone number for last minute updates.

My girlfriend and I would be quite interested in doing this ride on an ongoing basis - but we may not be able to get bikes in time for the first ride this weekend.

*the 3-speed bike I have that I thought was good has a bad hub, which would explain the broken shifter.

got my new strumey indicator chain last night. I should be good to go. I was able to tighten up my cotters a bit and they should last the first ride at least. Time will tell. I should probably polish it up a bit :) If the ride doesnt happend until next week...ill have plenty of time.
